This week Dr. Greta Pope sits down with Dr. Julia Nielsen. Dr. Nielsen has been one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most sought-after vocal pedagogues since founding her private voice studio in 1999. Her students are currently performing leading roles with major opera companies, soloing with symphonies, and raising their voices in elite professional choruses across the United States.
Dr. Nielsen graduated from Indiana University with a Doctor of Music degree in Voice under Martina Arroyo and a Masters Degree under Margaret Harshaw. She earned her B.A. in Music from Stanford University, with distinction and with honors.
This week we celebrate our 100th episode of The Business Savvy Singer Podcast! To commemorate this special event, we are honored to welcome Allen Henderson to the podcast. Versatile artist, teacher, arts administrator, and baritone Allen Henderson is currently Executive Director of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the world’s largest professional association of voice teachers, supervising a talented staff in promoting continuing education for voice teachers.
He is also Professor of Music at Georgia Southern University where he teaches voice and foreign language diction. He holds degrees from Carson Newman College (BM) where he was the outstanding graduate in music, The University of Tennessee (MM), and the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (DMA) where his minor was in Arts Administration and he was winner of the Corbett-Treigle Opera Competition.
Henderson conceived of and launched two major national level competitions, the National Music Theater Competition and National Student Auditions sponsored by NATS. He also served as president of the American Traditions Vocal Competition, a unique vocal competition celebrating the diversity of American vocal music currently in its 30th year.
As a church musician, Henderson has served churches in Tennessee, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Georgia and recently retired as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church, Statesboro, Georgia.

This week on The Business Savvy Singer Podcast Dr. Greta Pope sits down with Fez. Fez is a young singer and performer from Swaziland, Africa who sings in the “Afro Beat” style. Her style of music is sung partly in English and partly in the Zulu language. Fez recently launched her latest EP, Uthando – which means “love” in Zulu. This week Dr. Greta Pope sits down with bass-baritone, Dr. Sam Handley. Dr. Handley has performed more than a dozen roles at Lyric Opera of Chicago (where he was also a member of the Ryan Opera Center).
A fervent proponent of contemporary composers, Sam has delivered several world premieres and he has been a guest artist with the Cleveland Orchestra with Franz Welser-Möst at both Severance and Carnegie Halls, Houston Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia with James Conlon.
Dr. Handley has long loved sharing his knowledge of the art of singing and was a Teaching Fellow during both his Master and Doctoral studies. He has taught at UW-Platteville, Lee College, San Jacinto College, North Park University, Madison Summer Music Clinic, and Musica nelle Marche (Urbino, Italy) and is in demand as a Master Teacher, Clinician and Adjudicator. Sam currently serves on the faculty of DePaul University in Chicago. He is Vice-President of the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and Executive and Artistic Director of the Green Lake Festival of Music.

This week Dr. Greta Pope sits down with LaShera Moore. LaShera is a Chicago Native, Singer, Lyricist, Actress, EMC (Equity Membership Candidate), member of the Chicago Cabaret Professionals, and Graduate from Columbia College Chicago, where she received her B.A. in Vocal Performance.
At Columbia, she proved herself to be the goto singer for any style needed. She is currently a freelance vocalist and lyricist with The Forte Band alongside her band leader, guitarist and dear friend – Chris Forte. She also often performs at United Supper Club as LaShera Moore & Company.
