Today is a very important day for me. It celebrates my most proud accomplishment. I have enjoyed many wonderful milestones in my life, but none of them compare to the joy and fulfillment that I have experienced as a mother.
To have created a beautiful child with my husband Ed and to have had an opportunity to share all of the exciting and exasperating aspects of guiding that child into adulthood has been beyond measure. It has brought such richness to my life and I am grateful.
Our son Edward is now a young adult, finding his way in the world. We continue to encourage him and to be a safe place for him to share his triumphs and struggles. I have found that there are many different seasons of motherhood. When our children are young, they need us for everything. As they grow, they become increasingly independent, but they still need us in their lives.
I was well into adulthood with a family of my own when my mother passed away. Until the time of her passing, I shared with her all of my successes and failures… all of my joys and sorrows. She derived such pleasure from the closeness that we had. My mother did not advise me, but she listened, gently guided and supported my decisions. She was still being a mother to me, but in a way that was appropriate for that season of motherhood.
A mother’s impact on the world is huge. We have the privilege and obligation to produce new generations of smart, strong, caring and committed people who will make the world a better place. Kudos to Mothers everywhere!
