This has been an interesting week. I was a judge at the IMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) Competition, where I saw many very talented young singers. Several of the students that I coached at Fenwick High School (as Musical Director of their spring musical “The Wiz”) were at the competition. It was great to see them, though I was not able to hear them sing. I was not acquainted with any of the students for whom I provided scores. Many of the students that I work with at ChiArts were also there, but I didn’t see them at all.
I very much enjoyed being in that vibrant educational environment. It reminded me of my years participating as a young violinist in the Solo and Ensemble Competitions when I was in middle school and high school. The excitement amongst the youngsters was palpable. They were dressed in their finest…young gentlemen in slacks, shirt and tie…young ladies wearing dresses and pumps. It was a lovely sight to behold.
