Yesterday, I had a Skype consultation with a young musician from Los Angeles. This young woman has just graduated from college with a degree in vocal performance. We’ll call her Olivia.
Olivia is extremely talented and hard working, but she has no idea where to begin with moving her career forward. She graduated last weekend and she’s thinking “now what?”
We talked about many things during the 60 minute consultation. I was able to conclude that though Olivia wants success, she has no idea regarding what success means to her. This is a very common state for people in all kinds of professions. The desire to be successful is very strong, but determining what success means and figuring out how to achieve it is often elusive.
I advised Olivia to take some time over the next two weeks to sit down, make notes and determine what her ideal career would look like. How often would she like to work as a performer? What type of performing venues would she like…large…small, etc? What style of music would she like to sing? What are her financial objectives? Is she wiling/able to travel?…and many other questions.
This will help us begin to create solid goals and objectives for Olivia. We will begin that task during our next consultation in two weeks.
It is very important to determine exactly what success looks like and then create a specific roadmap to achieve it. The definition of success is different for everyone. We will get Olivia on the right track and with hard work and commitment, she will achieve her dreams.
