Mother’s Day conjures so many wonderful images for me. I think about my own lovely mother, who was the epitome of love. Our family was her entire life. I could call upon her at any time for anything and she would always be there. I could ask her for advice and she would share her honest thoughts and opinions with me in an objective way that encouraged me to make responsible choices in my life. She was the model for my life, showing me how to be a good wife, a good mother and a good person.
I have also had a great mother-in-law, who was an inspiration to me in so many ways. Upon the death of my mother, she came to me and said “I can’t take the place of your mother, but I hope that you’ll feel that you can always come to me.”
I’ve had such wonderful examples of good mothering. A mother’s unconditional love and gentle guidance is one of life’s truly special gifts.
I have the pleasure and privilege of being a wife and mother. What a blessing. My family is the center of my life. Motherhood for me has been and continues to be a spectacular and humbling journey. My son is no longer a child. He is a young man with goals and ideals of his own. I struggle to find appropriate ways of letting him know that I am always here for him, while keeping my mouth shut and allowing him to find his own way.
Edward, please forgive me if I don’t always get this right. Just as you are struggling to become an independent adult, I too am struggling to let you go. Please know that I love you and I want the very best for you always. May all of your dreams come true.
Mother’s Day celebrates the mothers that we’ve had…and the mothers that we are. It’s a challenging job, but there has never been a job more important and rewarding.
God bless Mothers around the world. Wishing you all a very Happy Mother’s Day.
