I had a wonderful experience last Monday evening. I was invited by my good friend, guitarist Lee Barrie to perform at Temple Sholom in Chicago. I was familiar with this event, as I had done it last year. This performance was to be for 100 homeless people as they were served a delicious Thanksgiving meal with all of the trimmings. There was turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, lemonade and so much more. It was fabulous…all made possible by Pete and Amy Kadens, along with an army of other dedicated volunteers from Temple Sholom.
This is the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Giving thanks for all that we have and reaching out to help others who might need a hand up.
I had a wonderful time with all of the folks at Temple Sholom. They are providing a much needed and extremely thoughtful service to the community.
I had an opportunity to talk with the people being served and every homeless person that I spoke with had a story to tell. Many of them stating “I haven’t always been like this.” In these tough economic times, it’s important to remember that through the loss of a job or through a devastating illness or through any number of other unfortunate set of circumstances, any of us could be homeless. The evening was sobering and extremely rewarding.
The next day our son Edward came home from college for Thanksgiving break. My husband, son and I spent a very relaxed few days in Michigan, giving thanks for our many blessings. It was a wonderful family time.
I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and that you really took the time to count your blessings. I know that I did.
